Renesas Electronics Corporation has unveiled a cutting-edge microprocessor (MPU) as part of the RTOS-based RZ/A series, catering to the increasing demands of advanced human-machine interface (HMI) systems. This new MPU is equipped with ample SDRAM, SRAM, and RTOS support, enabling the seamless execution of complex tasks and real-time graphical displays. It is specifically designed to power video and camera output on large LCD panels with resolutions reaching up to 1280×800, effectively meeting the display needs of next-generation home appliances, industrial and office automation, healthcare devices, and building control systems.

Similar to the RZ/A3UL, the RZ/A3M boasts a 64-bit Arm Cortex-A55 core with a maximum operating frequency of 1 GHz and 128 KB of on-chip SRAM. By integrating a high-speed 128 MB DDR3L-SDRAM in a single System-in-Package (SiP), the device simplifies the intricate task of designing a high-speed signal interface for connecting external memory.

The RZ/A3M is engineered to streamline system costs and expedite development processes. It supports external NAND and NOR flash via QSPI for data and code storage. When paired with a driver, high-capacity NAND flash presents a cost-effective solution for memory expansion. Moreover, the MPU features a BGA package with a unique pin layout, characterized by two main rows positioned along the outside edge. This layout not only simplifies PCB routing but also enables a low-cost, dual-layer printed wiring board design, resulting in significant cost and time savings.

“The RZ/A3M, the first RZ product with large built-in memory, is tailored to deliver high-function video and animation HMI performance while maintaining overall system costs at a minimum,” stated Daryl Khoo, Vice President of the Embedded Processing Marketing Division at Renesas. “Our goal is to provide a highly responsive user experience with top-notch, real-time graphics and offer design simplicity and cost efficiency to assist our customers in swiftly building advanced HMI systems.”

Renesas offers a comprehensive HMI development ecosystem that encompasses the Flexible Software Package (FSP), evaluation kits, development tools, and sample software. To expedite HMI graphics development, graphical user interface (GUI) solutions from partner companies like LVGL, Crank, SquareLine Studio, and Envox will be accessible for the RZ/A3M.

Moreover, Renesas has introduced the Multi-HMI Solution Winning Combination, which combines the new RZ/A3M MPU with a variety of compatible devices from its product lineup to deliver HMI functionalities for appliances, further enhancing the user experience and system capabilities.
