Toshiba Electronics Europe has introduced a cutting-edge intelligent power device (IPD) tailored for space-constrained brushless DC (BLDC) motor drive applications, including air conditioners, air purifiers, and pumps.

The newly unveiled Toshiba TPD4165K IPD boasts an enhanced maximum output current of 3A, a significant upgrade from the 2A rating found in Toshiba's previous offerings like the TPD4163K and TPD4164K. This advancement broadens the spectrum of supported equipment and enables its utilization in higher power scenarios, particularly suitable for sine-wave drive applications.

Recognizing the potential voltage fluctuations in certain regions where the IPD might be deployed, Toshiba has upped the absolute maximum voltage rating (VBB) to 600V to bolster long-term reliability, marking a 20% increase compared to its predecessors.

The compact TPD4165K is encased in a through-hole HDIP30 package, which occupies a 21% smaller footprint than the DIP26 package utilized in many of Toshiba's prior products. This downsizing streamlines the design process for challenging space-constrained applications, with the new device measuring a mere 32.8mm x 13.5mm x 3.525mm and supporting both three-shunt and single-shunt resistor circuits for current sensing.

Equipped with a suite of safety features such as over-current protection, under-voltage detection, and thermal shutdown capabilities, the IPD also allows external signal application to the SD pin for output stage control, while the DIAG output pin offers real-time status updates on safety conditions.

A reference design showcasing a sensorless BLDC motor drive circuit leveraging the TPD4165K IPD in conjunction with Toshiba's TMPM374FWUG microcontroller, featuring vector control engine capability, is available for download on Toshiba's official website.

Toshiba remains committed to expanding its product portfolio by introducing devices with enhanced characteristics, aimed at empowering designers with increased flexibility in their designs and contributing to environmental sustainability through energy-efficient motor control practices.

Volume shipments of the IPD are now underway, signaling the immediate availability of this innovative solution for BLDC motor drive applications.
