UK to Establish Quantum Standards Network

The United Kingdom is taking a significant step towards the development of quantum-based technology by setting up a dedicated body to oversee the creation of standards in this field. The UK National Physical Laboratory (NPL), in collaboration with various consortium partners, is spearheading the creation of the "UK Quantum Standards Network Pilot". This initiative aims to address the need for standards in quantum random number generation, quantum key distribution networks, quantum sources and sensors, frequency and timing, and quantum computing.

The consortium partners involved in this groundbreaking project include BSI (British Standards Institution), the UK government's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), UKQuantum, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), and the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC*). Together, they will work towards establishing a comprehensive framework of standards that will benefit various industries, including healthcare, finance, defense, and communications.

The long-term vision for the Quantum Standards Network Pilot is to evolve into the "UK Quantum Standard Centre", which will serve as a central hub for the UK's engagement with international standards. This will ensure that the UK remains at the forefront of the quantum revolution. By coordinating efforts and fostering collaboration, the UK Quantum Standard Centre aims to unlock the full potential of quantum technologies.

The pilot's objectives, as outlined by the NPL, are:

  • To provide a focal point for UK industry in terms of quantum technology standards.
  • To overcome barriers hindering the realization of quantum technology's potential.
  • To facilitate the application of quantum technologies in various sectors.

The establishment of the Quantum Standards Network Pilot marks a significant milestone in the UK's commitment to advancing quantum-based technologies. With the support of leading organizations and research institutions, the UK is poised to make significant strides in this field. The NQCC, a new research institution dedicated to scaling quantum computing, will play a crucial role in driving innovation and development in this area.

As the UK continues to invest in quantum technologies, the establishment of standards will be vital in ensuring interoperability, reliability, and security. By actively participating in international standards development, the UK Quantum Standard Centre will contribute to shaping the global landscape of quantum technology standards.
