Custom lithium battery pack maker Alexander Battery Technologies has recently announced the installation of what it claims to be "the world's most advanced laser welding machine" at its factory in Peterlee, UK.

The EV Flex laser welder, developed by Massachusetts-based IPG Photonics, utilizes machine vision and configurable optics to achieve micrometer-accurate welds between the terminals on a battery cell and busbar. By employing optical laser depth detection, the EV Flex is able to precisely control the area and depth of each weld in large battery packs, resulting in welds that are free from residue, spatter, and porosity.

Equipped with a 4kW laser, the EV Flex is also capable of logging data about every laser weld it performs. This advanced technology sets Alexander Battery Technologies apart as a leader in the field of embedded battery pack manufacturing.

"The installation of the world's first EV Flex machine continues a pattern of capital investment by Alexander Battery Technologies that is making us the most technologically sophisticated manufacturer of embedded battery packs in the world," stated Alexander CEO Mark Rutherford. "In batteries for automated guided vehicles, automated mobile robots, e-bikes, and electric motorcycles, we are achieving quality standards that match those specified by premium electric vehicle manufacturers."

Based in County Durham, Alexander Battery Technologies specializes in the design and production of custom lithium ion and LiFe battery packs. In addition to manufacturing, the company also offers services such as custom battery chargers, supply chain resilience, buffer stock management, end-of-life management, and rapid prototyping.
