UV-C light is a powerful tool in the realm of disinfection, known for its ability to destroy viral and bacterial DNA structures, thereby inhibiting their replication. In recent developments, UV-C LEDs have emerged as a promising alternative to traditional mercury lamps for disinfection purposes. Toyoda Gosei, a leading innovator in LED technology, is set to launch their high-power UV-C LEDs internationally starting from April 2024, with initial sales in Japan, China, and South Korea, followed by a rollout in other regions.

One of the key advantages of UV-C LEDs over mercury lamps is their environmental friendliness. These devices are mercury-free, more compact, and boast a longer lifespan, making them a sustainable choice for disinfection applications. The global health crisis brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic has further highlighted the importance of efficient disinfection methods, leading to increased adoption of UV-C LEDs in air and surface disinfection devices.

Despite their advantages, UV-C LEDs have faced limitations in light output due to differences in composition compared to traditional lighting LEDs. This has restricted their use in scenarios requiring high disinfection performance, where mercury lamps have remained the preferred choice. Toyoda Gosei, drawing on its expertise in crystallization and design of blue LEDs, has successfully addressed this challenge by developing UV-C LEDs capable of achieving a light output of 200 milliwatts with a single chip when driven by a current of 350 milliamperes.

The advancements in LED structure and composition have resulted in a significant increase in the amount of light that can be extracted, paving the way for enhanced performance. With a disinfecting capability approximately three times higher than previous models, these UV-C LEDs are poised to expand their applications, potentially serving as a future alternative to mercury lamps. This breakthrough promises to contribute to a more hygienic and safer living environment for individuals worldwide.
