Empower Semiconductor, a leading innovator in the semiconductor industry, has recently unveiled its latest breakthrough - the 16.6uF silicon capacitor designed for seamless integration into any System on Chip (SoC) substrate or interposer.

The EC1005P silicon capacitor, boasting a capacity of 16.6uF, represents the largest offering from Empower. Notably, it features an incredibly low equivalent series inductance (ESL) of just 1pH, making it an ideal choice for embedding into substrates or interposers that support high current SoC or chiplet configurations, particularly in the realm of AI applications.

Utilizing Empower's cutting-edge high-performance and high-density silicon capacitor technology, the EC1005P ECAP serves as the perfect solution for addressing the 'last inch' decoupling gap between voltage regulators and SoC supply pins. By consolidating multiple discrete components into a single monolithic device, this capacitor not only enhances electrical performance but also streamlines engineering complexities.

In addition to its impressive ESL of 1pH, the EC1005P silicon capacitor boasts an equivalent series resistance (ESR) of 3mΩ, all housed within a compact 3.643 x 3.036mm, 120-pad chip-scale package (CSP).

Featuring a standard profile of 784 microns, the device offers customization options to accommodate various height requirements. Its silicon-based design ensures exceptional stability across voltage and temperature ranges, eliminating concerns related to derating or aging commonly associated with traditional multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs).

"The demand for enhanced performance in SoCs and large computing processors continues to rise," remarked Mukund Krishna, senior manager of product marketing at Empower Semiconductor. "Conventional MLCCs are struggling to meet the stringent power integrity and voltage regulation standards of these advanced devices. With the EC1005P, we deliver near-ideal parasitic parameters, enabling SoCs to operate with reduced voltage margining and lower overall system power consumption."

The EC1005P ECAP silicon capacitor is currently available for sampling and is slated for volume production in the fourth quarter of 2024.
