Solar panels have become relatively inexpensive, leading to increased adoption in low-income countries. However, a common challenge faced in regions near the equator is the lack of electricity after sunset, around 6 PM. To address this issue, researchers are exploring innovative battery technologies that can store solar energy for later use.

Reverant Crispin, a professor of organic electronics at Linköping University, is optimistic about the potential of new battery technology to provide a solution. He mentions, "The hope is that this battery technology, even with lower performance than the expensive Li-ion batteries, will eventually offer a solution for these situations." Crispin's research group, in collaboration with researchers at Karlstad University and Chalmers, has made significant progress in developing a cost-effective and environmentally friendly battery.

The battery, based on zinc and lignin, offers a comparable energy density to lead-acid batteries but without the toxic lead content. One of its key advantages is its stability, with the ability to withstand over 8000 cycles while maintaining around 80% of its performance. Moreover, the battery can retain its charge for up to a week, a significant improvement compared to other zinc-based batteries that discharge quickly.

While zinc-based batteries are already available in the market, mainly as non-rechargeable options, researchers believe that they have the potential to complement or even replace lithium-ion batteries in the long run. Ziyauddin Khan, a researcher at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics at LiU, highlights the drawbacks of lithium-ion batteries, such as their explosive nature and environmental concerns related to elements like cobalt. Khan states, "Our sustainable battery offers a promising alternative where energy density is not critical."

In conclusion, the development of sustainable battery technology using zinc and lignin holds great promise for providing reliable energy storage solutions, especially in regions heavily reliant on solar power. With ongoing research and advancements in battery technology, there is hope for a future where clean and affordable energy is accessible to all, regardless of geographical location or economic status.
