Coherent, a leading technology company, has introduced a groundbreaking single-mode (SM), polarization-maintaining (PM) erbium-ytterbium co-doped optical fibre designed specifically for high-power 1550 nm applications. This innovative fibre is tailored for narrow linewidth and single-frequency amplifiers, marking a significant advancement in the field of optical technology.
With this latest development, Coherent has become the first company to offer support for pure SM, PM optical fibre capable of handling over 20 W average power. This breakthrough opens up new possibilities for applications in cold atom and optical quantum systems, as well as LiDaR sensors, providing researchers and engineers with enhanced tools for their work.
The key feature of Coherent's new product is the fusion of high-power performance with improved beam quality. The fibre incorporates a 130 µm geometry that prioritizes ease of manufacturing and lightweight design. This unique combination is made achievable through Coherent's proprietary manufacturing technology, setting a new standard in the industry.
According to Kanishka Tankala, Vice President of Specialty Fiber Products at Coherent, "We are thrilled to announce the launch of the world’s first exclusively single-mode, polarization-maintaining erbium-ytterbium co-doped fibre for high-power applications. This pioneering technology is optimal for quantum computing and coherent LiDAR research, while also significantly enhancing the power scalability of current single-frequency amplifier systems."
To ensure optimal beam quality and coupling efficiency, Coherent offers precision-matched passive fibres that can be utilized in the production of passive optical components or for beam delivery purposes. The PM-EYDF-10P/130-XPH fibre and its complementary passive optical fibre products are now readily available for purchase, providing customers with immediate access to cutting-edge optical solutions.
