The European Commission has recently issued new guidance regarding its 'one-size-fits-all' Common Charger Requirements. This directive, which focuses on a single USB-C charger for various electronic equipment, was officially approved by the EU Council in October 2022. The update falls under the Radio Equipment Directive (RED), a CE marking that governs the introduction of radio equipment into the EU market.
According to the latest directive, all mobile phones, tablets, and cameras sold within the EU must comply with the new regulations by the end of the year. Furthermore, the directive will extend its reach to laptops by the year 2026. The guidance outlines specific rules on harmonized charging receptacles, charging technology, and the separation of charging devices from the sale of electronic products, along with detailed requirements for product labeling.
One of the key changes introduced by the new guidance is the requirement for all covered equipment to utilize a harmonized charging receptacle, such as USB-C or USB-PD. The directive provides specifications for both standard and fast charging scenarios, permitting the use of alternative receptacles as long as they are accompanied by a USB-C receptacle.
Radio equipment listed in Part I of Annex Ia must incorporate USB power supply options as outlined in standard EN IEC 62680-1-3 for standard charging and USB Power Delivery (USB PD) for fast charging. Additionally, the equipment must support the full functionality of USB PD if it integrates any other charging protocol. The guidance also emphasizes the use of user-friendly pictograms to indicate the presence of a charging device with the covered radio equipment.
Keith Hutchinson, Deputy Head of Connectivity & Products Global Certification at SGS, expressed his support for the new directive, stating, "We wholeheartedly welcome this further clarity from the EU Commission on the application of its forward-looking Common Charger Directive." SGS, as an accredited Notified Body for the Radio Equipment Directive, stands ready to assist manufacturers, brands, and retailers in meeting the updated requirements.
