If Novara is confirmed as the location for Silicon Box's new chiplet factory, it would be situated near a 300mm wafer plant constructed by MEMC Electronic Materials SpA, the Italian subsidiary of GlobalWafers Co. Ltd. of Taiwan, which recently received a €100 million IPCEI subsidy for its operations.
Silicon Box is expected to receive a substantial subsidy from the Italian government for establishing its component assembly facility in the country. While the exact amount of the subsidy remains undisclosed, the company is likely to benefit significantly from this support.
Although the final decision on the factory's location is pending, Silicon Box is reportedly favoring Novara over two other potential sites in northern Italy, according to sources cited in a Reuters report. These alternative locations are situated in the Lombardy and Veneto regions.
The announcement regarding Silicon Box's choice of factory location is anticipated to be made on June 28, providing clarity on the company's expansion plans in Italy.
Founded in 2021 by the renowned figures behind chip company Marvell – Sehat Sutardja, Weili Dai, and Byung Joon (BJ) Han – Silicon Box recently concluded a successful US$200 million Series B funding round, valuing the startup at over US$1 billion. This financial backing has positioned the company for significant growth and innovation in the semiconductor industry.
