Rogue Valley Secures CHIPS Funding for 300mm MEMS Fab

Rogue Valley Microdevices (RVM) has recently made significant strides in expanding its operations by signing a non-binding preliminary memorandum of terms with the US Department of Commerce. This agreement supports the construction of RVM's second wafer fab, located in Palm Bay, Florida. The new facility will be 300mm capable, representing a major investment in the semiconductor industry.

The company has allocated a budget of US$30 million for the construction of the wafer fab, which will focus on manufacturing MEMS and sensors. With a projected manufacturing capacity of 21,000 wafer starts per month, the facility is expected to create job opportunities for approximately 75 individuals and commence production in 2025.

In response to the collaboration with RVM, US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo emphasized the importance of targeted investments in semiconductor manufacturing. She stated, "The proposed investment in RVM is another example of how the Biden-Harris Administration is making targeted investments across the semiconductor supply chain to reignite US leadership in semiconductor manufacturing."

Furthermore, Jessica Gomez, the founder and CEO of RVM, expressed the company's commitment to advancing microelectronics manufacturing in the United States. Gomez highlighted RVM's plans to utilize the capital infusion to enhance the production of intelligent sensors crucial to various industries such as automotive, biomedical, and industrial sectors. The expansion from RVM's existing facility in Oregon to the new location in Florida signifies a strategic move to establish the industry's first MEMS pure-play foundry with 300mm capability.
