TDK has recently expanded its range of non-isolated buck (step-down) DC-DC converters by introducing a new lightweight 20A version. The latest addition to the series is the 500W TDK-Lambda i7A DC-DC converter, which offers a trimmable 3.3 – 32V output from a 28V up to 60V input. This converter comes in a 1/16th brick pinout design and weighs only 25g in an open frame.
The 20A i7A models are designed to provide additional high-power outputs at a lower cost and with a higher efficiency of 96% compared to isolated DC-DC converters. These converters are ideal for various applications including mobile robotics, drones, medical equipment, industrial machinery, test and measurement devices, communications systems, computing devices, and portable battery-powered equipment.
One of the key features of the 20A i7A models is the availability of an adjustable over-current limit option. This feature helps reduce stress on the converter or load during excessive overcurrent conditions, allowing for fine-tuning based on the specific requirements of the system. The high efficiency of up to 96% minimizes internal losses and enables the i7A models to operate effectively in a wide range of ambient temperatures, from -40°C up to +125°C, even under low airflow conditions.
Moreover, the design of the 20A i7A models ensures low output ripple and excellent response to dynamic loads. These converters require minimal external components compared to discrete solutions, resulting in cost savings and efficient use of printed circuit board space. Like the higher capacity versions, the 20A model also offers three mechanical configurations, with the open-frame model being just 11.5mm high and weighing only 25g.
The standard features of the i7A series include output voltage adjustment, positive remote sense, negative logic remote on-off, input under-voltage protection, over-current protection, and over-temperature protection. Evaluation boards are available to simplify the qualification process for these converters. All models in the series comply with safety certifications to the IEC/UL/CSA/EN 62368-1 standards and carry CE and UKCA marking in accordance with the Low Voltage and RoHS Directives.
