Europe's X-Fab Silicon Foundries SE (Tessenderlo, Belgium) has recently become the target of a sophisticated operation that has created a false media presence, complete with a website, LinkedIn and Youtube accounts, and press releases, all using X-Fab information. This elaborate scheme has been attributed to an entity known as BintangChip.

The BintangChip profile mimics X-Fab's website layout and links, with the only difference being the insertion of the name BintangChip in place of X-Fab. Shockingly, the website even falsely claims that X-Fab CEO Rudi de Winter is the CEO of BintangChip Group.

Responding to inquiries from eeNews Europe, a spokesperson for X-Fab stated, "The shadow or fake web presence by BintangChip has been set up without our knowledge. There is no connection between X-Fab and this company, which, to our knowledge, does not even exist." The spokesperson further mentioned, "Our IT security team has been actively working to identify the perpetrator of this scam, and we have taken measures to shut down the site. Legal action is also being considered."

One notable discrepancy between BintangChip and X-Fab is the claim in press releases that BintangChip was established in January 2024. However, a striking similarity lies in the fact that the BintangChip website lists wafer fabs in locations identical to X-Fab's, including Lubbock, Texas, Corbeil-Essonnes, France, and various cities in Germany and Malaysia.

The press releases from BintangChip also include links to X, LinkedIn, and Youtube accounts, further blurring the lines between the two entities. Despite attempts by eeNews Europe to reach out to BintangChip for clarification, no response has been received to date.

Interestingly, in Malay, the word "Bintang" translates to star, asterisk, or celebrity. It is worth noting that Bintang is also a well-known Indonesian brand of beer. The use of this name in the context of the fraudulent operation targeting X-Fab adds another layer of intrigue to this unfolding story.
