The European Innovation Council (EIC) has introduced a new initiative in the form of a ‘pre-accelerator’ programme designed to assist deep tech startups in navigating the complexities of applying for EIC funding. One of the main criticisms of the EIC programme has been the perceived difficulty and bureaucratic hurdles associated with securing funding. The pre-accelerator seeks to address this by offering 70% funding, up to €500,000, to startups and small companies, enabling them to better position themselves for Accelerator funding, attract private investment, and access support mechanisms at national and regional levels throughout Europe.

The focus of the pre-accelerator programme is on technologies that have already been validated in the lab at technology readiness level TRL4 and above, leveraging the resources and expertise of the Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe research programmes. By targeting companies from the 13 member states that may have limited experience with deep tech funding, the initiative aims to provide coaching and mentoring to support their growth and success in the competitive innovation landscape.

Furthermore, the pre-accelerator will offer participants expedited access to the EIC programme, addressing another common critique of the application process. This strategic move is expected to streamline the path to funding and increase the overall efficiency of the programme, ultimately benefiting a broader range of innovative startups and companies.

The joint effort between the European Innovation Council (EIC) and the Widening Participation and Strengthening the European Research Area (WIDERA) programme is supported by a €20 million allocation under the WIDERA Work Programme 2025 for the next two years. The EU13 member states participating in WIDERA include Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia, highlighting the commitment to fostering innovation and research excellence across Europe.

Interested companies are encouraged to submit their applications by the deadline of 18 November 2025 to be considered for the pre-accelerator programme. This initiative represents a significant opportunity for deep tech startups to access crucial funding, mentorship, and support to propel their innovations to the next level of success.
