ROHM has introduced its latest CMOS operational amplifier, the TLR1901GXZ, which boasts an exceptionally low operating circuit current. This device is specifically designed for applications with size constraints, targeting handheld measurement instruments, wearable electronics, and indoor motion detection systems.

For readers interested in op-amp technology, this development signifies significant progress in low-power, miniaturized analog components that cater to the increasing demand for energy-efficient sensing and measurement solutions in consumer, industrial, and IoT sectors.

Meeting the Need for Miniaturization and Low Power

The shift towards more advanced control in battery-operated devices has brought about a greater focus on compact, power-efficient signal amplification. With the proliferation of sensors for various parameters like temperature, flow, pressure, and vibration, the amplifiers driving them are confronted with challenges related to accuracy, size, and efficiency.

ROHM proposes the TLR1901GXZ, which makes use of the company’s Nano Energy circuit technology, process enhancements, and advanced packaging. Housed in a wafer-level chip-scale package (WLCSP) measuring under 1 mm² with a 0.35-mm ball pitch, the device operates at a mere 160 nA typical current. This ultra-low power consumption not only extends battery life but also allows for high-density mounting in extremely confined board spaces.

TLR1901GXZ: Precision and Versatility

Aside from its efficiency and compact size, the TLR1901GXZ offers a maximum input offset voltage of 0.55 mV, approximately 45% lower than similar solutions. With a temperature drift of just 7 µV/°C, the device ensures stable, high-accuracy performance throughout its operational range, making it ideal for precision measurement applications.

ROHM also emphasizes the device’s compatibility with its ultra-compact resistor lineups, such as the MCR004 (0402 metric / 01005 inch) and MCR006 (0603 metric / 0201 inch), facilitating easy gain adjustment. Environmentally friendly versions, like the lead-free MCR004E, further promote sustainable product designs. To aid developers in evaluating new solutions, ROHM offers adapter boards featuring SSOP5 ICs.

Future Outlook

In a recent announcement, ROHM underscored its ongoing dedication to advancing miniaturization, power efficiency, and noise reduction in forthcoming op amp designs. The company highlights that reducing offset and broadening supply voltage ranges will be crucial in enabling more precise application control.

“Moving forward, ROHM will persist in enhancing power savings in op amps through advancements in miniaturization and original ultra-low power technologies,” the company stated. “Simultaneously, we are committed to enhancing device performance by minimizing noise and offset, expanding power supply voltage ranges, and contributing to addressing societal challenges through enhanced application control.”

ROHM’s TLR1901GXZ positions the company as a formidable player in the realm of ultra-low-power analog design. It equips developers with tools that align well with the needs of many upcoming portable, wearable, and sensor-driven systems.
