Fibocom has unveiled the LE271-GL, a global LTE Cat.1 bis cellular module designed to streamline IoT deployments worldwide with a single hardware SKU. This module is ideal for applications that require extensive geographic coverage while maintaining a balance between cost, power consumption, and design flexibility.

For readers at eeNews Europe involved in large-scale or cross-border IoT projects, the introduction of LTE Cat.1 bis is significant as it is increasingly seen as a viable long-term solution with the phasing out of 2G and 3G networks in Europe and other regions.

The LE271-GL is engineered to support both FDD-LTE and TDD-LTE bands, encompassing major global frequencies within a single module variant. This strategy aims to minimize regional product variations, potentially simplifying certification, inventory management, and logistics for device manufacturers operating in multiple markets.

Fibocom highlights that the module, measuring 17.7 × 15.8 mm, is pin-to-pin compatible with several existing Fibocom LTE Cat.1 modules like the MC661, LE270, and LE37X series. This compatibility enables seamless migration to the LE271-GL for existing designs without significant PCB redesigns, depending on specific system requirements.

Performance, power efficiency, and software flexibility are key features of the LE271-GL. Fibocom claims that the module can achieve network registration times below 3.5 seconds and includes optimizations for AT command response and USB enumeration. Based on an OpenCPU architecture, the module allows application code to run directly on the module, potentially reducing the need for an external host processor in certain designs.

For devices powered by batteries, the module offers support for low-power features such as DRX and microamp-level sleep current. Fibocom notes that specific interfaces remain powered during standby, which can be beneficial for applications requiring limited functionality while minimizing energy consumption.

The LE271-GL integrates various interfaces including USB, UART, SPI, I²C, ADC, and GPIO, and supports protocols like MQTT, HTTP, and SSL. Positioning options encompass LBS and Wi-Fi scan-based location, catering to indoor or GNSS-constrained environments.
