Siemens partners with ESA EPIC for European space startups

Siemens has recently announced its participation in the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Partnership Initiative for Commercialisation (EPIC), with the goal of bolstering Europe’s burgeoning space startup ecosystem. This strategic move is intended to provide support to young space technology companies, enabling them to expedite the scaling of their innovations and successfully bring them to market.

For engineers, founders, and technology leaders closely monitoring the European space sector, this collaboration signifies an enhanced access to advanced digital engineering tools and industrial expertise. This unique combination has the potential to accelerate product development and commercialization within Europe’s rapidly expanding space economy.

Digital Engineering Tools Empowering Space Startups

As part of the agreement, Siemens will offer support to startups emerging from ESA’s Business Incubation Centres (ESA BICs) through the provision of software, technical guidance, and mentorship. The primary focus of this initiative is to assist companies in transitioning from early-stage development to industrialization and eventual global commercialization.

A key component of the collaboration is the utilization of Siemens Xcelerator software, which features digital twin technology and a comprehensive digital engineering and simulation environment. This technology will enable startups to design, simulate, and validate intricate space systems in virtual settings before physical implementation.

Siemens asserts that this approach can significantly expedite product development cycles, enhance reliability, and reduce costs — crucial factors for startups seeking to establish themselves in the fiercely competitive global space industry.

Furthermore, the initiative will encompass mentorship from Siemens experts and opportunities for joint activities aimed at enhancing visibility within the European space ecosystem.

Fostering Europe’s Expanding Space Ecosystem

ESA’s Business Incubation Centres constitute the largest network of incubators dedicated to space-related startups in Europe. Presently operating across 37 centres, the program has already supported over 2,000 startups.

These incubators are designed to aid entrepreneurs in the development of space technologies while also promoting the transfer of space-derived innovations into terrestrial industries such as telecommunications, mobility, and environmental monitoring.

The support offered by Siemens will extend to projects backed by ESA Technology Brokers and the agency’s Phi-LabNET initiative, which concentrates on expediting innovation in domains like Earth observation and data-driven space technologies.

ESA views this collaboration as a significant stride towards fortifying Europe’s position in the global space economy while fostering sustainable growth throughout the sector.
