Infineon Technologies has introduced a cutting-edge 48 V wide input voltage range digital hot swap controller, the XDP711-001, specifically designed for high-power AI servers. This innovative controller features a programmable safe operating area (SOA) control, providing enhanced safety and efficiency in server applications.

The XDP711-001 is equipped with input and output voltage monitoring capabilities, ensuring accuracy within 0.4 percent. Additionally, the controller offers system input current monitoring with a remarkable accuracy of 0.75 percent at full ADC range, enabling precise fault detection in high-power server systems.

One of the key highlights of the XDP711-001 hot swap controller is its utilization of pulsed SOA current control technology. This technology ensures safer turn-on operations, particularly in systems with non-optimal field-effect transistors (FETs), ultimately leading to a reduction in the system bill-of-material (BOM) cost. The controller is optimized to drive multiple MOSFETs in parallel, supporting the high-power requirements of modern AI servers.

The XDP711-001 features a sophisticated three-block architecture that combines high-precision telemetry for monitoring and fault detection, digital SOA control tailored for power MOSFETs, and high-current integrated gate drivers capable of driving up to eight n-channel power MOSFETs. This design flexibility allows for the creation of Power Delivery Boards (PDB) ranging from 4 kW to 8 kW, catering to diverse server power requirements.

With a wide input voltage range of 7 V to 80 V and the ability to withstand transients up to 100 V for 500 milliseconds, the XDP711-001 offers robust input power monitoring and reporting with an accuracy of ≤1.15 percent. The controller also features PMBus compliant active monitoring, enhancing system reliability, and minimizing the need for external components, making it ideal for space-constrained server racks.

The XDP711-001 hot swap controller further boasts a programmable gate shutdown mechanism for severe overcurrent (SOC) situations, ensuring rapid and reliable shutdown operations within 1 microsecond. With options for external FET selection and one-time programming (OTP), the XDP711-001 provides flexibility in programming faults, warnings detection, and de-glitch timers, catering to various usage scenarios.

Magdalene Boebel, Vice President ICs at Infineon, expressed confidence in the XDP711-001, stating, “The Infineon XDP711-001 hot swap controller, with its feature-rich design and high-precision analog-front-end, addresses the challenges in pluggable AI server solutions. Its comprehensive health monitoring, telemetry, and programmability set new standards for system reliability in AI servers, network routers, and switches.”

The XDP711-001 hot swap and system monitoring controller IC is packaged in a VQFN-29 6mm x 6mm form factor, offering a compact solution for server applications. The availability of the XDP711-001 is expected in mid-2025, providing advanced features and reliability for next-generation AI server designs.
