Infineon Technologies is making strides in the development of a new family of High Voltage Precision Analog (HVPA) versions of its PSoC 4 microcontrollers tailored for battery management systems (BMS) designed for electric vehicles powered by lithium-ion batteries.

The upcoming Infineon HV microcontroller lineup is set to encompass a range of products designed specifically for monitoring and overseeing high voltage (400 V and above) as well as low voltage (12 V/48 V) batteries in electric vehicle BMS applications.

One of the initial offerings in this family is a device engineered for use with 12V lead-acid batteries. The PSoC 4 HVPA-144K microcontroller delivers a fully integrated embedded system geared towards monitoring and managing automotive 12 V lead-acid batteries, a crucial component for the 12 V power supply within vehicle electrical systems.

Equipped with dual high-resolution sigma-delta ADCs and four digital filtering channels, this microcontroller enables precise measurement of key battery parameters like voltage, current, and temperature, achieving an impressive accuracy level of up to ±0.1 percent for determining the battery's state-of-charge (SoC) and state-of-health (SoH).

The lead-acid device boasts two programmable gain amplifiers (PGAs) featuring automatic gain control, facilitating autonomous control of the analog front end without the need for software intervention. By utilizing shunt-based current sensing, this microcontroller offers enhanced accuracy compared to traditional Hall sensors.
