Variscite has recently unveiled a new series of SMARC-compatible System on Modules designed for developers creating compact, low-power embedded devices. The first module in this lineup is the VAR-SMARC-MX8M-PLUS, based on the NXP i.MX 8M Plus processor.

For professionals in industrial IoT, medical electronics, and secure edge AI systems, this release underscores the evolution of SMARC standards-based modules to meet SWaP-C constraints while addressing modern connectivity and cybersecurity needs.

SMARC-compatible module tailored for AI and vision applications

The VAR-SMARC-MX8M-PLUS is powered by NXP’s 1.8GHz quad Cortex-A53 processor and an 800-MHz Cortex-M7 real-time coprocessor. With AI/ML acceleration and an advanced Image Signal Processor, this module is well-suited for embedded vision and edge intelligence applications.

Variscite highlights that the new SMARC format enhances the capabilities of its existing DART-MX8M-PLUS by offering extended connectivity options like additional USB ports, dual Ethernet controllers with IEEE1588 support, extra GPIO, and a Secure Real Time Clock.

The company emphasizes that SMARC compatibility is particularly beneficial for devices focused on size, weight, power, and cost optimization, including point-of-sale terminals and mobile industrial systems.

Security features and compliance with industry standards

Security is a key aspect of the VAR-SMARC-MX8M-PLUS module. Variscite has integrated Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 functionality through a dedicated hardware security chip, ensuring cryptographic protection for sensitive assets such as encryption keys and passwords.

The module is designed to meet the requirements outlined in the European Union’s Cyber Resilience Act and is compliant with North America’s FIPS 140-3 security standard, providing peace of mind to developers working on secure applications.

Customization options, BSP Support, and Pin2Pin scalability

Variscite offers unique customization options within the SMARC ecosystem, allowing configuration orders starting from as low as 20 units. The company also prides itself on providing direct BSP and OS support for Yocto, Debian, Android, FreeRTOS, and Zephyr at no additional cost.

Ofer Austerlitz, VP of Business Development and Sales at Variscite, stated, “The VAR-SMARC-MX8M-PLUS is an excellent choice for devices requiring low power consumption, cost-effectiveness, and high performance.” Additionally, the module introduces a new Pin2Pin family, enabling customers to enhance processing performance while maintaining the same carrier board design.
