The High Performance Software Foundation (HPSF)

The Linux Foundation has announced the formation of the High Performance Software Foundation (HPSF). This new foundation aims to build, promote, and advance a portable software stack for high performance computing (HPC) through a series of technical projects. The goal is to increase adoption, lower barriers to contribution, and support development efforts in the field.

In recent years, the use of HPC has become widespread in scientific computing, digital engineering, and AI applications. As a result, more and more data centers are deploying GPUs and other compute accelerators. HPSF plans to leverage investments made by the United States Department of Energy's Exascale Computing Project (ECP), the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, and other international projects to take advantage of the performance offered by these diverse architectures.

As an umbrella project under the Linux Foundation, HPSF will provide a neutral space for pivotal projects in the high performance software ecosystem. This will enable industry, academia, and government entities to collaborate on the scientific software stack. The foundation has already gained strong support from leading companies and organizations in the HPC landscape, including Amazon Web Services, Argonne National Laboratory, Intel, NVIDIA, and more.

To manage the various working groups and initiatives, HPSF will establish a technical advisory committee (TAC). This committee will be responsible for overseeing the projects and ensuring their success. The foundation will also follow a governance model based on the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF).

Initial Open Source Technical Projects

The HPSF is launching with several initial open source technical projects. These projects aim to make life easier for high performance software developers through focused initiatives. The details of these projects will be announced at the ACM/IEEE Supercomputing Conference (SC23) on Monday, November 13. HPSF representatives will be present at the conference to give a kickoff presentation and engage with prospective projects and members.

Get Involved with HPSF

The High Performance Software Foundation welcomes organizations from across the HPC ecosystem to get involved and help drive innovation in open source HPC solutions.
