Renesas Electronics has unveiled its latest addition to the RZ/G Series, a 64bit MCU designed specifically for 5G IoT edge devices and Gigabit Wi-Fi 7 gateways. The new MCU, called RZ/G3S, offers advanced features and capabilities to meet the demands of these cutting-edge technologies.

The RZ/G3S MCU is capable of operating at an ultra-low standby power consumption of 10µW. It runs on the Linux operating system and is equipped with a PCI Express interface, enabling high-speed connectivity with 5G wireless modules. Renesas has also incorporated enhanced security features, including tamper detection, to ensure the utmost data security.

Powered by a 1.1GHz Arm Cortex-A55 core and two 250MHz Cortex-M33 sub-CPUs, the RZ/G3S MCU provides users with the ability to distribute workloads to the sub-CPUs. This allows the device to efficiently handle tasks such as receiving data from sensors, controlling system functions, and managing power. The sub-CPU can operate at a power consumption of 40mW while the device is in standby mode.

In order to facilitate fast Linux start-up, the RZ/G3S MCU retains DRAM data through DDR self-refresh. It also offers a range of peripherals, including Gigabit Ethernet, CAN, and USB, to support various connectivity requirements.

Renesas has developed a customized version of Linux specifically for the RZ/G3S MCU. The Verified Linux Package (VLP), based on the industrial-grade Civil Infrastructure Platform (CIP) Linux, is available for developers. With VLP, developers can benefit from over 10 years of maintenance support, ensuring long-term protection against security threats. The RZ/G3S MCU also features tamper detection, secure boot, and secure debug functionalities.

The RZ/G3S MCU is planned to be Level 2 PSA Certified, and IAR is providing support for the root-of-trust with its Embedded Workbench for Arm development tool. The MCU is expected to find applications in various fields, including smart meters and tracking devices.
