Rugged MIL-DTL-38999 Treatment Enhances USB Type-C Connector

Amphenol, a leading manufacturer of electronic connectors, has recently unveiled a new USB Type-C connector designed specifically for use in harsh environments. The rugged connector, named USB3CFTV, features a tough exterior based on the MIL-DTL-38999 series III standard, with a shell size of 11.

The USB3CFTV connector is built to withstand shocks, vibrations, and cable traction, making it ideal for use in demanding applications. Its tri-start thread coupling ensures a secure connection, even in the harshest conditions. Additionally, the connector is IP68 rated, providing protection against fluids and dust. With an expected lifespan of at least 500 mating cycles, the USB3CFTV connector offers long-lasting durability.

One of the key features of the USB3CFTV connector is its tool-less mating and unmating process. This means that users can easily connect and disconnect the connector without the need for any additional tools. To enhance security, Amphenol offers a range of screwdriver-operated external security covers from their Caplock and Pluglock ranges, preventing casual unauthorized access.

The USB3CFTV connector is designed to operate in a wide temperature range, from -40 to +85°C. It can handle currents of up to 5A and voltages of up to 20V (100V withstanding). This makes it suitable for a variety of applications, including high-power devices.

Amphenol also offers USB3.2 Gen 1 compatible cables in lengths of up to 1m, which can be purchased alongside the connectors. The company provides a range of shell material and coating options to meet different environmental regulations and chemical environments. These options include aluminum with olive drab cadmium coating, which offers a 500-hour salt spray resistance but is not RoHS-compliant. RoHS-compliant options include aluminum with black zinc nickel plating, aluminum with tin-zinc plating, marine bronze, and passivated stainless steel. It is important to note that aluminum with nickel plating is also RoHS-compliant but has a lower rating of 48 hours.

In terms of mounting options, the USB3CFTV connector offers multiple flange options for chassis mounting. One notable option is the stand-off jam-nut receptacle, which features a hexagonal nut mount and a through-hole PCB-compatible rear. This allows for easy installation and integration into various systems.
