NTT, Hynix, and Intel have announced a collaboration to develop optical integrated circuits (ICs), according to a report by the Nikkei. The Japanese government is also providing significant support for this initiative, with a funding of $305 million.

"We hope that by enabling faster communications and realizing reduced power consumption, this collaboration will be a game changer in the future," said Ken Saito, Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry.

The main objective of this collaboration is to establish a production facility capable of manufacturing terabit per second (Tbit/s) ICs with 30-40% less power consumption than traditional silicon ICs by fiscal year 2027.

Intel's involvement in this collaboration is particularly significant as the company increasingly requires photonics expertise for its Foveros packaging technology.
