The UK Government has initiated the first funding call for its C-LEO programme, aimed at enhancing the country’s satellite communications sector, following its announcement in the recent Spring Budget.

With £60 million in funding set to be distributed over the next four years for satellite constellation-related projects, awards of up to £20 million per initiative will be supported by both the UK Space Agency and the European Space Agency’s Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES) programme. Further details about the funding call can be found online.

The primary objective of this initiative is to sustain the UK’s competitive advantage amidst a period of rapid evolution and expansion within the global space industry. The goal is to secure high-value contracts within the global supply chain for satellite constellations.

Dr. Paul Bate, Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency, emphasized, "The UK is already home to some of the world’s most innovative leaders in satellite communications technologies and expertise, but continued growth requires sustained and strategic investment. This significant new funding enables us to offer additional support, demonstrating the UK’s enduring commitment to the satellite communications sector and facilitating the realization of its most ambitious projects."

The launch of the C-LEO programme comes against the backdrop of a record number of global satellite launches in 2023, with over 2,900 satellites successfully deployed into orbit. The majority of these satellites will be integrated into commercial constellations, which are projected to expand further.

The allocated funding can be utilized for research and development endeavors aimed at enhancing the capabilities of satellite constellations, making them more proficient in data processing in space and enhancing the services provided to customers on Earth, as outlined by the agency.

The deadline for submitting applications is set for midday GMT on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.
