STMicroelectronics has made a significant breakthrough in the IoT industry by unveiling the pioneering ST4SIM-300, the first embedded SIM (eSIM) designed to comply with the upcoming SGP.32 GSMA standard for eSIM IoT deployment.
The ST4SIM-300 comes equipped with advanced features tailored to streamline the widespread adoption of IoT devices that are connected to cellular networks. Unlike traditional eSIM solutions, including machine-to-machine (M2M) and eSIM Consumer specifications, the SGP.32 eSIM for IoT has been specifically developed to address the unique requirements of modern IoT deployments.
One of the key highlights of the ST4SIM-300 is its ability to facilitate seamless remote SIM provisioning (RSP), enabling effortless management of SIM profiles for large fleets of devices. Moreover, the eSIM supports remote switching between network providers, eliminating the need for physical SIM card replacements.
Designed in compliance with the latest 5G standard, the eSIM enables the deployment of devices with limited user interfaces and low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) devices, thereby enhancing connectivity and efficiency in IoT applications.
ST is currently offering samples of the ST4SIM-300 eSIM in various form factors, including wafer-level chip-scale packages (WLCSP) suitable for a wide range of applications such as smart meters, GPS trackers, asset monitors, remote sensors, and medical wearables.
Agostino Vanore, the Edge Authentication and M2M Cellular Marketing Manager at STMicroelectronics, emphasized the significance of the ST4SIM-300, stating, “Leveraging the incoming GSMA specification, our embedded SIM for IoT solution enhances flexibility, eases network provider switching, and simplifies managing large numbers of connected devices.”
The eSIM is equipped with an EAL6+ certified ST secure microcontroller and has been meticulously designed with security in mind from the ground up. It is compatible with the GSMA IoT SAFE applet, providing secure element features for end-to-end communication and ensuring scalable security for IoT device creators.
