VyperCore, a tech company based in Bristol, is making waves in the industry with its ambitious goal of designing and selling a cutting-edge 5nm chip and card tailored for the server market. The primary objective behind this initiative is to enhance the performance of existing software applications significantly. According to Russell Haggar, the co-founder, CEO, and chair of VyperCore, "We are a processor company and we are promising a 5x speed up without changing a line of code with memory safety in hardware. This can be inside every CPU from a toaster to a server." The company's flagship product, a single-core RISC-V processor named Akurra, is currently operational on an FPGA utilizing its proprietary hardware memory management technology. VyperCore's roadmap includes taping out a single-core test chip next year, followed by the development of a commercial multicore server chip and an accompanying accelerator card.

While the technology developed by VyperCore has versatile applications across various processor types, the initial focus is on accelerating datacenter operations. Haggar elaborates, "We are targeting a server-class 64-bit RISC-V quad-core processor, likely in N5 [5nm], and server card hardware by the end of 2026." The company successfully secured £4 million in funding last year and is currently in the process of raising another round to support its ambitious endeavors.

One of the key highlights of VyperCore's memory management architecture is its ability to boost the performance of C or C++ code by 2x and structured, interpreted languages like Python by an impressive 5x without necessitating any modifications to the existing codebase. This becomes particularly crucial in the era of generative AI, where non-optimized code is prevalent. Haggar emphasizes that this approach not only enhances performance but also fortifies the chip's security against common software vulnerabilities, eliminating the need for rewriting code in languages like Rust.
