BYD Semiconductor shows automotive controller chips

BYD’s chip design spinout has been working with TSMC and Mediatek on a central automotive controller chip and a 4nm smart cockpit chip.

The central controller chip designed by BYD Semiconductor is reported to have a performance of 80TOPS for its smart driving system say reports.

The aim is that this will eventually replace the Nvidia Orin and the J6E from Horizon Robotics currently used for highway NOA (Navigate on Autopilot), or SAE Level 3 ADAS driver assistance. BYD, which is subject to a 17.4% European tariff, has launched its Seagull model in the  region.

A variant of the in-house smart driving chip will eventually be used in the  Seagull, Zhang Zhuo, general manager of BYD’s Ocean series sales division is reported as saying.

Smartphone maker Xiaomi, which has also developed its own vehicle, is an investor in BYD Semiconductor alongside ARM China, Lenovo, SK Telecom the owner of SK Hynix, and Chinese foundry SMIC.

BYD has also worked with Mediatek on the BYD9000 smart cockpit chip, built on a 4nm TSMC automotive process. This a custom variant of the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 series with an ARMv9 core, 5G baseband and DDR5 memory interface and supports up to 11 connected screens. This will be used first in the Formula Leopard series and Denza Z9 which.
