Micron to spend US$2.2 billion to expand Virginia wafer fab

US memory chip manufacturer Micron Technology Inc. (Boise, Idaho) is planning to spend US$2.17 billion to expand and modernize its wafer fab at Manassas, Virginia.

The project is set to modernize the existing facility to produce state-of-the-art DRAMs to address demand from US domestic automotive, aerospace, defense and industrial markets, according to a statement issued by Glenn Youngkin, the Governor of the state of Virginia.

Micron will be eligible to receive a special appropriation of up to $70 million from the Major Employment and Investment Commission based on an investment of more than $2.1 billion and the creation of 340 jobs, subject to approval by the Virginia General Assembly.

“As the only US-based manufacturer of memory, Micron is uniquely positioned to bring state-of-the-present memory manufacturing to the US, strengthening the country’s technology leadership and fostering advanced innovation,” Sanjay Mehrotra, CEO of Micron, in the same statement.

The scale of the expansion in terms of wafer starts per month or the timeline were not disclosed.
