ASUS IoT has introduced a new compact, fanless industrial PC called the PE1000U, specifically designed for edge AI workloads in robotics, machine vision, and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). This innovative device combines Intel’s latest Core Ultra Series 2 processors with a rugged DIN-rail design, making it ideal for harsh industrial and on-vehicle environments.

The release of the PE1000U highlights the trend of shrinking edge compute platforms that incorporate AI acceleration and enhanced I/O capabilities. It showcases how PC-class processing is being tailored for space-constrained and vibration-prone deployments, catering to the evolving needs of industrial applications.

Edge performance in a small footprint

Measuring a mere 63 x 110 x 160mm, the PE1000U is crafted to fit into spaces where traditional box PCs may struggle. Powered by either an Intel Core Ultra 265U or 235U processor, the device integrates CPU, GPU, and NPU resources. ASUS positions this hybrid architecture as suitable for real-time motion control, AI inference, and graphics processing.

The system offers convenient front-access I/O, including four USB ports, up to four COM ports, and up to four Ethernet ports, with two 2.5GbE ports as standard. Additionally, dual CAN Bus support and an isolated digital I/O module cater to deterministic industrial control tasks. For visualization and HMI purposes, DisplayPort and HDMI outputs support up to two 4K displays.

The PC is designed to accept a wide 9–36V DC input and features built-in ignition control, making it well-suited for vehicle-based systems. Operating within a temperature range of -25°C to 70°C, the unit has undergone testing to meet US MIL-STD-810H standards for vibration up to 5Grms.

Fanless and built for the factory floor

A standout feature of the PE1000U is its fully fanless thermal architecture. ASUS employs a wave-pattern aluminum heatsink that efficiently transfers heat from the CPU and memory to the outer chassis. With no fans or vents, the sealed IP40-rated enclosure helps prevent dust and contaminants from entering, enhancing long-term reliability.

This design approach enables silent operation in demanding environments like factory floors, semi-outdoor kiosks, and mobile platforms, even under continuous vibration or elevated ambient temperatures.

Focused on robotics and computer vision

ASUS IoT has clearly targeted robotics and vision-intensive applications with the PE1000U. For AMRs, the compact size, fanless design, and multiple LAN ports simplify integration with LiDAR, cameras, and fleet management systems. Optional WiFi 6E or 5G connectivity provides support for wireless backhaul.

In collaborative robot applications, the system benefits from vibration tolerance and screw-lock connectors. The Intel Core Ultra processor delivers the deterministic compute power required for real-time perception and motion planning. In laser processing and industrial vision systems, the DIN-rail form factor and single-side I/O streamline cabinet wiring. Multiple Ethernet ports facilitate multi-camera setups, while precise I/O triggering is achieved without introducing electrical noise.
