Advantech adds Intel Core Series 3 to edge AI systems

Advantech is enhancing its industrial embedded boards and edge AI systems by incorporating Intel Core Series 3 processors, with a focus on supporting lightweight edge AI inference in applications with space and power constraints. This move provides insight into how mainstream processor platforms are being tailored for practical AI workloads at the edge, particularly in sectors like retail, healthcare, and industrial automation.

Intel Core Series 3, based on Intel 18A process technology, features a hybrid CPU design with up to six cores, including two Performance-cores and four Efficient-cores. Advantech highlights that this platform offers up to 1.2 times higher single-thread performance compared to previous-generation processors.

The processor integrates an Xe3 graphics engine and Intel NPU 5.0, allowing AI workloads to be distributed across the CPU, GPU, and NPU. This combined architecture can achieve up to 40 TOPS of AI performance, potentially enabling local inference without constant reliance on cloud processing.

For industrial developers, the dedicated NPU plays a crucial role in efficiently managing always-on edge AI inference tasks, while the CPU and GPU handle control, visualization, and general computing functions.

Miller Chang, President of Advantech Embedded Sector, emphasized the importance of efficiency and balance in scalable deployment of edge AI. He stated, “Edge AI is increasingly moving toward practical inference workloads at the edge, where efficiency and balance are key to scalable deployment. By working closely with Intel, we are delivering efficient and balanced systems that enable customers to deploy lightweight edge AI inference applications with greater speed and operational efficiency.”

Advantech is set to launch several Intel Core Series 3-based products starting in April 2026, including the MIO-5356 embedded single-board computer, the ARK-1252 DIN-rail edge computer, and the ARK-2233 fanless edge computer. These systems are designed for applications like smart retail kiosks, self-checkout terminals, healthcare assistance devices, and industrial robotics, which require responsive local processing, predictable operation, and long service life.

The architecture supports up to 10 years of product availability, catering to industrial equipment manufacturers with longer design-in cycles. Additionally, the processors support Intel Time Coordinated Computing and Time-Sensitive Networking, potentially benefiting automation and control systems that demand more deterministic performance.
