This interview was held with Guy Regev, CEO of AlephZero Consulting.
Tell me a bit about your background? How did you first get started with AlephZero?
My background is leading and developing very complex systems and system-on-a-chip semiconductor devices for industries ranging from micro-processors and DSPs to wireless cellular handsets and base-stations. During my long career I got exposed to many different technologies and was very fortunate to see many of the products we were working on hit mass scale in the markets.
Tell me about AlephZero?
My company is called AlephZero Consulting. We are a group of scientists and engineers that develop cutting edge algorithms and their implementations in hardware (PCBs, ASICs and FPGAs) for both our customers and our own internal products. We live on the cutting edge of Radar signal processing, perception, computer vision while employing traditional methods as well as more recent ones such as machine and deep learning.
We channel a lot of our income from services towards developing our own products and IP in the areas of remote sensing of vital signs, fall detection and prediction for elderly care, smart security systems and smart home. Think of a baby monitor that can alert the parents if, god forbid, their infant stopped breathing or got forgotten in their car by mistake. Think of helping diagnosis of sleep issues and even sleep apneas without touching the person/child. Think of alerting the care-takers of an old person that fell in their home and can’t get up.
Our philosophy is to provide extreme value to our markets and customers, whether we provide consulting for them, or through our own products. This is why we chose to focus only on remote sensing, without the privilege many other products have, which are touching the person, such as wearables.
When did you start AlephZero? What were you doing before that?
My brother and partner Nir Regev and I started Aleph about 3 years ago, before that I was leading the development of a huge revolutionary all-optical-interface switch-ASIC for data-centers at a start-up.
What problem did you see that needed to be fixed? What is your approach to solving that?
Radar is new in the commercial world. Up until a few years ago, the only companies that used radars were defense related. That all changed when radar has been minimized and democratized for the commercial consumer markets. Now you can find radar chips that cost less than $10/unit in quantities. This opened up many new markets and opportunities, but not a lot of talent is commercially available for the development of these new product opportunities. This is where Aleph comes in. Our deep expertise with radars, computer vision and algorithms, as well as our ability to implement these algorithms in embedded software or dedicated hardware gives us an edge over other more general consulting firms. These same abilities is what drives our internal product development as well.
What is a typical customer for AlephZero?
Fortunately, there is no typical customer for our company. Our customers range from big names like Google, ResMed, FLIR, XPERI to smaller and hopefully very successful start-ups, such as Echodyne. The markets we work in also vary from automotive (autonomous/smart vehicles), to smart home companies, to agricultural companies and ground penetrating radars. This gives us the ability to get exposed to many different use cases, applications and technologies that most companies will never get exposed to, and thus we are able to exponentially increase our experience since we get to see so many different technologies, corner cases and use cases.
Are you currently hiring? What type of jobs?
We are always looking for engineers, scientists and interns in the fields of radar signal processing, computer vision, FPGA and ASIC design, and embedded software.
What is your #1 advice for people who want to work for AlephZero?
Be obsessed about the technology you’re making and deliver quality work. We are office-less, so all our employees are working remotely. We’ve positioned ourselves like this starting 3 years ago, when it wasn’t as common as now, post-COVID19. Actually, this philosophy, that people will do good work even if they are remote, served us well before and during this difficult COVID19 times.
