Toshiba Introduces New Through-Hole Motor Drivers

Toshiba is targeting pumps, air conditioning, and fans with its latest 600V three-phase brushless DC motor drivers. The TPD4163K and TPD4164K models come in a 32.8 x 13.5 x 3.525mm 'HDIP30' package, featuring pins on a 1.778mm pitch. This odd pitch choice has raised questions, and Electronics Weekly is investigating further.

The new package design offers a reduction in PCB mounting area by over 20% compared to Toshiba's previous DIP26 products such as TPD4123x, TPD4144x, and TPD4135x. According to the company, both ICs include six IGBTs, level shifters, boot-strapping, and safety protection. They require a 15V supply and six appropriately-phased logic inputs.

The TPD4163K can deliver up to 1V, while the TPD4164K is rated at 2A. The IGBT saturation levels are typically 2.6V or 3V, and the fly-back diode diodes drop 2V or 2.5V respectively. Although rated at 600V, these motor drivers are intended for use at lower voltages. Toshiba states that the 600V rating increases the design margin, which is particularly useful in locations where mains power is variable or subject to fluctuations.

The safe operating area for the TPD4163K is up to 450V at 1A, while the TPD4164K can work up to 300V at its full 2A, derating linearly to 1.3A at 450V. The input logic thresholds for both models are 1.5V and 2.5V. Protections include under-voltage, bootstrap under-voltage, output over-current, and thermal shut-down.

These new through-hole motor drivers, the TPD4163K and TPD4164K, are similar to the recently launched TPD4163F and TPD4164F models. The F-series devices have the same ratings as the K-series, but they come in a smaller 17.5 x 12mm surface mount package with a 0.8mm pitch and gull-wing leads. All of these packages have missing legs on the output side to increase the voltage rating.

Toshiba has also developed an evaluation kit that pairs the 2A through-hole TPD4164K with the TMPM374FWUG microcontroller. This microcontroller includes a vector control engine, allowing for the implementation of 'sensorless' vector control with supplies ranging from 120 to 340Vdc. The evaluation board measures 130 x 85 x 53.4mm.
