Aixtron Chooses Turin for Chip Equipment Factory

The renowned company Aixtron, specializing in metalo-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) equipment, has announced its strategic move to establish a new production facility in Italy. This decision comes in response to the projected increase in European demand for their equipment, particularly for applications such as VCSELs, microLEDs, SiC, GaN chips for power, and GaN for RF applications.

Italy has been chosen as the location for the new facility, with the company citing the favorable market conditions and the potential for growth in the region. The Turin site will complement Aixtron's existing facilities in Herzogenrath, Germany, and Cambridge, England, which serve as hubs for research, development, and production.

During a press conference, Felix Grawert, CEO of Aixtron, expressed optimism about the new venture, stating, "Within two to three years, we envision a significant share of Aixtron volume to be shipped from this location." The company was able to acquire an existing production facility in Turin under attractive commercial terms, providing the necessary infrastructure for manufacturing their equipment.

The proximity to Politecnico University in Turin, renowned for its expertise in semiconductor technology, is seen as a valuable asset by Aixtron. The collaboration with the university is expected to enhance research and development efforts, further solidifying Aixtron's position in the industry.

While specific details regarding the cost of building the factory and the expected output have not been disclosed, Aixtron remains confident in the success of this expansion.
