Altris, a company based in Sweden, has recently entered into an exclusive agreement with battery manufacturer Clarios to develop low-voltage sodium cells. This partnership, known as the Joint Development Agreement (JDA), aims to advance sodium ion cell technology for low-voltage applications. Clarios, the parent company of VARTA Automotive, will focus on developing Battery Management Systems (BMS), software, and system integration to complement Altris' work.

Earlier this year, Altris and Clarios collaborated to establish a detailed production plan for low-voltage vehicle batteries utilizing sodium-ion cells. The importance of reliable low-voltage energy sources in vehicles, whether hybrid or fully electric, cannot be overstated. These sources power essential systems and functions, especially as vehicles become more complex with software-based features like steer-by-wire, brake-by-wire, autonomous technologies, and enhanced in-cabin experiences.

According to Federico Morales Zimmermann, Clarios' Vice President and General Manager of Global Customers, Products, and Engineering, the JDA with Altris is a significant step towards expanding their innovative battery solutions. Zimmermann highlighted the importance of meeting the increasing demand for sustainable energy storage systems and the flexibility to produce various advanced battery types to support evolving low-voltage requirements driven by advanced vehicle technologies.

Björn Mårlid, CEO of Altris, expressed the company's commitment to developing better, safer, and truly sustainable sodium-ion batteries through the partnership with Clarios. Mårlid emphasized the unique advantages of their sodium-ion battery chemistry, such as superior low-temperature performance, high current delivery capability, and competitive energy density. These features make sodium-ion batteries an ideal fit for mobility solutions in the automotive battery market.
