Introducing the latest advancements in nanocrystalline core technology, Schaffner has unveiled the newest additions to its renowned RT series, now designated as the RT series N. This upgraded line includes the RT8121, RT8131, RT8521, and RT8531 models. One of the key highlights of the RT series N is its remarkable achievement of up to 15 dB higher attenuation performance compared to its ferrite-based common mode choke predecessor across the relevant frequency bands of the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) spectrum.

By effectively filtering out electromagnetic common mode noise on the grid side of an electrical device, the RT series N successfully addresses the issue of electromagnetic interference (EMI) directly on a printed circuit board (PCB). Despite maintaining the same 65 mm diameter as Schaffner’s existing RT series, these new chokes empower designers with increased power capabilities within tight spatial constraints, thereby reducing the necessity for an external EMC filter.

Featuring rated currents ranging from 25 A to 63 A at 60°C, along with operational voltages of up to 600 VAC and 450 VDC, the RT series N is optimally designed for frequencies spanning from 10 MHz to 30 MHz. This versatile choke facilitates cost-effective PCB designs supporting up to 100 A with forced cooling, and it offers both horizontal and vertical PCB mounting options to cater to diverse design specifications. Additionally, the choke boasts a wide range of inductance ratings (3 mH to 13 mH), minimal magnetic leakage flux, and exceptional winding insulation.

Designed to accommodate a variety of configurations including 2-wire and 3-wire setups for DC, 2-line AC, and 3-phase applications, the new common mode choke is poised to capture the interest of machine and electronics manufacturers with power requirements ranging from 10 kW to 80 kW. Particularly well-suited for applications such as power supplies in EV charging stations and robotics, this high-quality choke is equipped with an approved UL insulation system that facilitates seamless customizations.

Among its diverse applications, the RT series N finds utility in photovoltaic inverters, converters, uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs), switch mode power supplies, LED lighting systems, communication devices, and medical/laboratory equipment. While not every application may necessitate the enhanced power capabilities offered by the new chokes, they serve as a valuable safety measure for designers seeking to enhance EMC levels in case of failed measurements.

In the words of Felix Wedel, Strategic Product Manager at Schaffner, “As a global leader in power quality, we are thrilled to introduce this new core technology option for the RT choke series. With upcoming regulations mandating EMC compliance measurements at 9 kHz, our latest offering equips designers with a reliable solution featuring superior performance within the same compact dimensions.” Wedel further emphasizes, “These new chokes not only deliver exceptional impedance across critical segments of the EMC frequency band while maintaining a compact footprint, but they also streamline the design process by offering various mounting options coupled with unprecedented performance levels.”
