Diodes Incorporated has unveiled two quad-channel hybrid ReDrivers designed to enhance high-resolution video transmission over HDMI, catering to the increasing need for bandwidth and signal clarity in modern display systems. The newly introduced PI3HDX12311 and PI3HDX6311 devices are engineered to boost signal integrity in HDMI links while simplifying design complexities. These devices offer a practical solution for developers of high-speed digital video systems, with compatibility spanning from HDMI 1.4 to HDMI 2.1 specifications, serving a wide range of applications from consumer electronics to embedded display systems.

Support for HDMI 2.1 and legacy modes

Diodes has specified that the PI3HDX12311 supports HDMI 2.1 fixed rate link (FRL) at speeds of up to 12 Gbps per channel, while the PI3HDX6311 is optimized for HDMI 2.0 at 6 Gbps. Both devices also provide support for TMDS signaling and DisplayPort Dual-Mode (DP++) V1.1 level shifting. Acting as intermediaries between a source and sink, the ReDrivers play a crucial role in restoring degraded signals across transmission lines, ensuring signal integrity is maintained throughout the process.

The hybrid design of these devices allows them to operate in either limited or linear mode. In HDMI 1.4 scenarios, they function as limited ReDrivers with pre-defined swing settings for compliance. For HDMI 2.0 and 2.1 applications, the ReDrivers seamlessly transition to linear mode, effectively serving as trace cancellers that do not interfere with link training—a critical requirement for modern high-bandwidth links.

With a remarkable aggregate data rate support of up to 48 Gbps, the PI3HDX12311 is well-suited for 8K DTV and other ultra-high-definition applications, as highlighted by Diodes in their recent product launch announcement.

Smart features and compact footprint

Both the PI3HDX12311 and PI3HDX6311 come equipped with a variety of control features, such as pin-strapping configuration for gain, equalization, output swing, and -1-dB linearity settings. Additionally, they offer flexibility in AC/DC coupling, far-end receiver detection, IOFF support, and automatic transmitter (TX) settings selection. Diodes has emphasized power efficiency through integrated HPD monitoring, where the device enters a low-power state if the hot-plug-detect pin remains low for more than 2ms. The integrated DDC listener enhances system awareness by monitoring HDMI Forum VSDB data and tracking SCDCS register changes.

These devices are housed in a 32-pin X1-QFN2845 package measuring 2.85 mm × 4.5 mm, offering a compact footprint for easy integration. Operating within a temperature range of -40°C to +70°C, with a typical power dissipation of 726 mW, the devices are designed to meet the demands of various operating environments.

Starting at $0.99 for the PI3HDX12311 and $0.77 for the PI3HDX6311 in 3,500-piece volumes, these products are now available for purchase, providing developers with advanced tools to enhance signal integrity and performance in high-speed digital video systems.
