Everspin Technologies has announced a new partnership with Frontgrade Technologies to develop a radiation-hard macro of its Magnetoresistive Random Access Memory (MRAM) persistent memory specifically designed for space applications. The $9.25 million contract will involve Everspin providing its PERSYST embedded MRAM technology, logic design, and back-end-of-line manufacturing services. These components will be utilized in the creation and demonstration of a Strategic Radiation Hardened (SRH) high-reliability eMRAM macro intended for future products by Frontgrade, to be manufactured at Skywater.

The collaboration between Everspin and Frontgrade marks a significant step forward in the advancement of MRAM technology for space-related purposes. Sanjeev Aggarwal, President Technologies and CEO of Everspin Technologies, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “Everspin is pleased to work with Frontgrade on a custom Radiation Hardened Spin Transfer Torque MRAM program. Extending our decade-long relationship to next-generation MRAM, this project will expand MRAM’s use and availability to more defense and aerospace radiation-hardened use cases.”

Notably, the agreement with Frontgrade aligns with the current and future strategic requirements of the US Department of Defense (DoD) for both commercial and defense space systems. The manufacturing process will involve utilizing the Skywater RH90 CMOS process in Bloomington, Minnesota, in conjunction with Everspin’s back-end-of-line MRAM process in Chandler, Arizona. The contract is structured to include phases totaling up to $9.25 million for Everspin Technologies over multiple years, with the initial phase valued at approximately $1.25 million and provisions for potential future phases.

In addition to the collaboration with Frontgrade, Everspin has secured a separate $14.55 million funding over the next 30 months to develop a comprehensive plan for providing manufacturing services tailored to the aerospace and defense sectors. This funding will be instrumental in devising a strategy to mitigate risks associated with the MRAM manufacturing supply chain, leveraging various CMOS technologies to ensure reliability and consistency in production.
