Fast reliable skin cancer detection with AI

With melanoma responsible for 60 percent of all malignant skin growths and its incidence on the rise, early detection is crucial. However, current diagnostic methods are often laborious and costly, leading to late detection. In response to this challenge, the Intelligent Total Body Scanner for Early Detection of Melanoma (iToBoS) project, funded by the EU, has brought together 20 partners to develop an AI-based full-body scanner. The goal is to enhance the existing examination method, accelerate the process, and improve early detection of skin cancers.

The iToBoS scanner, developed by project partner Bosch, is capable of scanning the entire body in just six minutes. This innovative technology utilizes a cognitive AI assistant, incorporating AI models and XAI methods from Fraunhofer HHI. By automating the process and providing medical professionals with a risk assessment for each individual mole, the scanner aims to streamline the diagnostic process and reduce the need for unnecessary biopsies.

The cloud-based AI diagnostic platform, another key component of the project, integrates health data from various sources, including patient files, genomic data, and in vivo imaging. This comprehensive approach allows for a more holistic analysis and interpretation of the data, ultimately leading to more accurate and efficient diagnoses. The EU has allocated 12.1 million euros in funding to support the development and implementation of this cutting-edge technology.

Among the 20 project partners involved in the iToBoS initiative are BARCO NV, Canfield Scientific, Fraunhofer HHI, IBM Israel – Science and Technology Ltd., and University of Queensland. Each partner brings unique expertise and resources to the project, contributing to the collaborative effort to revolutionize melanoma detection and diagnosis. By leveraging the collective knowledge and capabilities of these diverse partners, the iToBoS project aims to make significant strides in improving healthcare outcomes for patients at risk of skin cancer.
