Free AI coding assistant for embedded software developers

Microchip Technology is leveraging artificial intelligence to support software developers and embedded engineers in writing and debugging code through the introduction of its MPLAB® AI Coding Assistant.

This free tool, which is a Microsoft® Visual Studio® Code (VS Code®) extension, is built on Continue, the prominent open-source AI coding assistant. It also includes an AI chatbot developed by Microchip to offer real-time support.

The Microchip chatbot introduces a chat functionality that empowers developers to assess and refine code directly from the sidebar. This interactive support tool delivers personalized, real-time guidance and insights on Microchip-specific products. It also features advanced autocomplete for smoother coding, an edit function, and error detection for swift code adjustments within the current file, along with integrated access to searchable Microchip documentation within the IDE.

Setting it apart from other code assistants in the market, the MPLAB AI Coding Assistant’s sidebar chat feature can present block diagrams directly within the VS Code interface, not just textual responses. This functionality, coupled with easy access to a repository of documentation on Microchip microcontrollers and microprocessors, simplifies the coding process and enhances precision.

Both the chatbot and documentation library will receive continuous updates to ensure that developers have access to the latest information and support resources.
