An extensive outage of Amazon’s cloud computing infrastructure on Monday caused widespread disruptions to online services across various industries. The incident, which impacted the AWS US-EAST-1 region, resulted in the downtime of major platforms such as Snapchat, Roblox, Fortnite, Robinhood, McDonald’s, Coinbase, Signal, and even Amazon’s own Ring and Alexa services.

Efforts to restore services began promptly, with AWS engineers working to bring back functionality approximately three hours after the initial reports. Despite the restoration process, users still encountered intermittent issues. The company identified the root cause of the problem as faults in its domain name system (DNS), responsible for translating web addresses into IP addresses.

Restoration Efforts Continue

Cybersecurity experts characterized the gradual recovery as a common occurrence during the restart of a complex cloud infrastructure. Mike Chapple from the University of Notre Dame likened the situation to the aftermath of a large-scale power outage, highlighting that temporary disruptions are to be expected as systems are reactivated.

Amazon confirmed that 64 internal AWS services were impacted by the outage. This incident underscores the reliance of a significant portion of the internet on a small number of cloud providers, including Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. The repercussions of their outages can be felt globally, emphasizing the critical role these companies play in the digital ecosystem.

Patrick Burgess from BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, emphasized that the modern world heavily relies on cloud services. While such disruptions can be disruptive, they are typically resolved within a few hours. This outage is the most recent in a series of AWS service interruptions, following notable incidents in 2023 and 2021. Amazon assured users that they are actively working towards a complete resolution and have already restored most affected services.
