The LEXI-R10 series of LTE Cat 1bis modules from u-blox has recently undergone expansion to include a global variant, enabling worldwide connectivity. Additionally, the new SARA-R10 series has been introduced to provide an easy migration path from legacy 2G/3G designs. This series also features a combo variant with specialized features for comprehensive indoor and outdoor tracking.

Predictions from analyst firm Techno Systems Research Co., Ltd indicate that LTE Cat 1bis is poised to dominate the market, accounting for 43.6% of all non-handset cellular devices by 2029. This technology is expected to be the top-selling cellular option for the Internet of Things (IoT) in the coming years. The latest modules from u-blox further solidify their LTE Cat 1bis portfolio, catering to both IoT applications and users transitioning from older cellular technologies.

The ultra-compact LEXI-R10 Global module, measuring just 16 x 16 mm, is designed for use in size-constrained IoT applications worldwide. This module is ideal for devices such as people or pet trackers and wearables. It stands out as the world's smallest single-mode LTE Cat 1bis module, boasting indoor location capabilities and a core certified by a US Mobile Network Operator (MNO).

On the other hand, the new SARA-R10 series mirrors the capabilities of the LEXI-R10 Global but adopts u-blox's popular SARA form factor. With the ongoing sunsetting of 2G and 3G networks globally, the SARA-R10 presents a seamless upgrade path for product designers currently utilizing 2G and 3G u-blox SARA modules. This transition to 4G LTE aligns with the current global cellular standard and its anticipated longevity.

Both the LEXI-R10 and SARA-R10 modules offer the option to integrate an eSIM, along with an integrated Wi-Fi Sniffer for indoor localization through the u-blox CellLocate service. This service leverages both Wi-Fi and cellular networks for accurate positioning.

Among the variants is the SARA-R10M10, recognized as the world's smallest LTE Cat 1bis module with an embedded Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). This module supports concurrent communication and tracking, making it an excellent choice for asset tracking and telematics applications that require continuous connectivity. Its compact size, combined with GNSS, Wi-Fi scanning, and global LTE coverage, enables precise indoor and outdoor positioning worldwide. Notably, the SARA-R10M10 is 50% smaller than u-blox's previous LTE Cat 1bis combo module, the LENA-R8M10.

The introduction of the new u-blox R10 modules provides product designers with a 4G cellular connectivity solution tailored for IoT applications necessitating medium data rates, global portability, ultra-low power consumption, and compact form factors. The initial samples of the LEXI-R10 Global and SARA-R10 modules are expected to be available by Q3 2024.
