Cree has recently unveiled preliminary data on the lens-less 'high intensity' (HI) variant of its XPG-4 LEDs. These LEDs, measuring 3.3 x 3.3mm and operating at 3A 10W, are a first in the XPG series and promise unparalleled candela and throw for the most demanding lighting needs. Cutter Electronics, a component distributor, will be stocking these parts and has emphasized that the charts provided in this release contain preliminary data.

Lens-less LEDs emit approximately 10-20% less total light compared to those with a primary lens. However, what they do produce is emitted over a smaller effective area, resulting in increased light per square millimeter. This is why Cree refers to them as 'high intensity' LEDs. The advantage of lens-less LEDs is that, when combined with a given diameter of secondary optics, they allow for the production of the narrowest beams. In colloquial terms, they offer more 'punch' or 'throw'.

According to Cutter Electronics, there will be 90CRI XPG-4 HI LEDs available. However, the Pro9 version, which includes 95CRI variants, is not included in the current release information. Cutter Electronics, based in Melbourne, Australia, is a solid-state lighting component distributor that ships its products worldwide.
