Texas Instruments has recently unveiled a new series of GaN power switches designed for ac-dc and dc-dc converters. These switches come with integrated drivers, protection, and current sense emulation, making them highly efficient and versatile.

The series, known as LMG362x, offers different sizes of GaN hemt switches. According to the company, "Using the LMG3622 only requires setting the desired turn-on slew rate with a programming resistor and calculating the current sense resistor." This means that designers can achieve up to 94% system efficiency for 75W ac-dc applications using these ICs.

Some notable features of these power switches include a bottom-side cooled 8 x 5.3mm QFN package, cycle-by-cycle over-current protection, enable pin, over-temperature protection, and slew rate control. Additionally, the …24 and …22 variants also offer USB C/PD compatibility.

Texas Instruments has optimized these devices for various topologies, including quasi-resonant fly-back, asymmetrical half-bridge fly-back, inductor-inductor-converter (LLC), totem-pole power factor correction, and active clamp fly-back. This makes them suitable for a wide range of applications.

To facilitate evaluation and implementation, there is an evaluation module available for each IC in the series. These modules implement a 65W quasi-resonant fly-back converter with USB Type-C PD. The available options are LMG3622EVM-082, LMG3624EVM-081, and LMG3626EVM-074.

For instance, the LMG3622EVM-082 meets CoC Tier 2 and DoE Level 6 efficiency requirements. It can handle inputs ranging from 90 to 265Vrms and deliver outputs of 20Vdc at 3.25A, or 5, 9, or 15Vdc at 3A.

If current sensing is not necessary, Texas Instruments also offers similar pad-for-pad devices called LMG3612 and LMG3616.
