Infineon Technologies and Amkor have recently entered into a partnership aimed at actively engaging with common suppliers to promote sustainability within their supply chain.
The primary objective of this collaboration is for Infineon and Amkor to work together to identify areas for improvement and provide support to suppliers in establishing their own science-based emissions reduction targets.
Utilizing their Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) business relationship, the two companies are focusing on addressing emissions throughout the supply chain. In a significant move earlier this year, both organizations announced the establishment of a dedicated packaging and test center at Amkor’s manufacturing facility in Porto, Portugal.
Infineon initiated a supplier engagement program in 2023 and has been actively collaborating with over a hundred suppliers to define and implement science-based targets. Recently, the company disclosed the carbon footprint associated with a variety of power and automotive devices across the supply chain.
Working closely with suppliers will involve a series of workshops, meetings, and the exchange of best practices and insights related to decarbonization. The goal is to pinpoint areas for enhancement and assist suppliers in establishing science-based emissions reduction targets aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative.
Angelique van der Burg, Chief Procurement Officer at Infineon, emphasized the importance of including supply-chain-related Scope-3-emissions in the sustainability efforts. She stated, “Infineon has made significant strides towards achieving carbon neutrality for scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, with a notable reduction in emissions despite revenue growth. However, Scope-3-emissions from the supply chain remain a significant challenge to minimize. Collaboration with our suppliers is essential to effectively reduce CO2 emissions, benefiting not only our companies but society as a whole."
Giel Rutten, President and CEO of Amkor, expressed enthusiasm about strengthening the partnership with Infineon through this strategic collaboration. He highlighted the complexity of addressing Scope 3 emissions and the mutual benefits expected from this joint effort. Rutten emphasized the importance of this initiative in supporting Amkor's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 through enhanced supply chain engagement and the establishment of ambitious science-based targets.
By joining forces, Infineon and Amkor are committed to driving positive environmental impact across their value chains. This collaboration signifies a significant step towards a more sustainable future for both companies and the broader society.
