The Internet of Things (IoT) Security Forums have a clear objective: to create practical guidelines for deploying IoT technology across consumer and industrial markets. This initiative aims to address all fundamental aspects of an IoT deployment, including devices, networks, and cloud/application software.

"Our group believes that IoT security requires a holistic approach, and there is a significant need for more practical information in this area," says IMC Chairman Sri Ramachandran, who also serves as the CTO at Somos. "While technical standards have been developed, we have identified gaps in how regulators and others examine the various layers of the IoT stack. Our goal is to bridge these gaps and establish best practices that can guide users, technology providers, and regulators."

The IMC consists of 28,000 qualified IoT users globally, and their support is crucial for implementing a practical approach to IoT security and privacy. The Board of Governors, which includes representatives from over 30 IoT technology providers, will oversee the project's development and implementation.

Newly appointed IMC Vice Chairman Ellen Boehm, who serves as the SVP of Global IoT Strategy & Operations at Keyfactor, will lead the effort. The Working Groups for Networks, Devices, and Cloud/App will be led by industry experts Syed "Z" Hosain, Harald Remmert, and Fred Yentz, respectively.

"As we embark on this project, there are still uncertainties about its outcomes," says Boehm. "The open forums will serve as a platform to gather feedback from experts in the field. Following these discussions, our Board will strategize to define clear directions and outcomes that will benefit organizations seeking to implement security measures across the entire IoT stack."
