US consultancy Jacobs has been selected to design a cutting-edge Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) packaging plant in Sanand, Gujarat, India. The project is commissioned by CG Semi, a joint venture between CG, Renesas Electronics, and Stars Microelectronics (Thailand).
The upcoming facility, spanning over 28 acres, is set to become a hub for manufacturing advanced and legacy packages catering to various industries including automotive, consumer electronics, industrial applications, and 5G technology. Jacobs, known for its majority ownership of PA Consulting in the UK, will provide comprehensive engineering design services for the main plant, along with handling engineering, procurement, and construction services (EPCS) for smaller production lines to establish a state-of-the-art OSAT facility.
This initiative aligns with the broader semiconductor ecosystem development in Gujarat, as it will complement the $11 billion semiconductor fab project led by Tata and Powerchip. The combined efforts aim to create a robust infrastructure capable of handling 50,000 wafer starts per month across different process technologies, in addition to supporting a Tata assembly plant.
Bob Pragada, Chair and CEO of Jacobs, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with CG Semi, stating, "Jacobs partnering with CG Semi on this pivotal project underscores our commitment to delivering innovative and sustainable solutions in the rapidly expanding semiconductor market in India. With our extensive experience in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, and proven capabilities, we are eager to contribute to the success of their new facility, helping to drive growth and technological advancement in the region."
