UK startup Integrals Power has made a significant breakthrough in battery technology with the development of Lithium Manganese Iron Phosphate (LMFP) cathode active materials. These materials promise to revolutionize the performance of battery cells, offering higher energy density and voltage.
Integrals Power has successfully addressed the challenge of maintaining specific capacity while increasing the percentage of manganese in LMFP test cells. This achievement has led to cathode active materials that can support higher voltages and deliver superior energy density compared to traditional chemistries.
The innovative LMFP materials developed by Integrals Power combine the cost-effectiveness and longevity of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) with the higher energy density of Nickel Cobalt Manganese (NCM) chemistries. This breakthrough could potentially increase the range of electric vehicles by up to 20%, or allow for smaller and lighter battery packs without sacrificing performance.
Featuring 80% manganese content, the LMFP materials offer a specific capacity of 150mAh/g and operate at a voltage of 4.1V, surpassing the capabilities of existing materials in the market. Third-party testing conducted by experts at the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC) has validated the performance of these materials in coin cells and EV-representative pouch cells.
Behnam Hormozi, the founder and CEO of Integrals Power, expressed his excitement about the breakthrough, stating, “Our proprietary materials and production processes have allowed us to achieve a high level of manganese content in LMFP cells while maintaining specific capacity. This positions us at the forefront of LMFP chemistry, offering a sustainable and affordable alternative to NCM chemistries."
Integrals Power's commitment to manufacturing these advanced materials in the UK is not only a strategic move for the company but also a significant step towards establishing a sustainable domestic battery industry. By sourcing raw materials from European and North American suppliers, Integrals Power ensures the production of high-performance cathode materials with greater energy density compared to Chinese-manufactured alternatives.
