WeEn Semiconductors, a power spinout from NXP, has recently introduced a new range of IGBTs with voltage ratings of 650V and 1200V, with plans for a 1400V version in the pipeline. The 1200V IGBT devices unveiled at the PCIM event this week are built on a fine trench gate field-stop (FS) technology, which ensures a more uniform electric field distribution within the chip. This innovation supports higher breakdown voltages and enhances dynamic control, ultimately leading to improved efficiency in power conversion designs.
According to CEO Markus Mosen, these latest devices represent the third generation of IGBTs and modules developed by the company. The team is already working on a 1400V version to further expand their product lineup and cater to a wider range of applications. The continuous innovation and commitment to pushing the boundaries of power semiconductor technology are key drivers behind WeEn Semiconductors' success in the industry.
Infineon, a major player in the semiconductor market, has also made strides in the IGBT space with the introduction of a 1700V IGBT boost. This competitive landscape underscores the importance of technological advancements and the race to meet the evolving needs of various industries.
The 1200V IGBT devices come in different configurations, offering ratings of 650V/75A, 1200V/40A, and 1200V/75A. Depending on the specific device chosen, they are available in TO247 or TO247-4L packages. All devices are designed to operate at a maximum junction temperature (Tj) of 175 °C and have undergone rigorous testing, including high-voltage H3TRB and 100%-biased HTRB tests, to ensure reliability and performance under challenging conditions.
Target applications for these new IGBT devices span a wide range of industries, including solar inverters, motor control systems, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and welding equipment. The devices' positive temperature coefficient facilitates parallel operation in demanding applications where enhanced performance is essential. With options for bare die, discrete, and module product variants, WeEn Semiconductors offers flexibility to meet the diverse needs of customers across different sectors.
