New 80V 1.4A DIP Photo Relay with Built-in Protection

Toshiba has recently announced the release of the TLP241BP, an 80V 1.4A photo-relay that comes with over-temperature and over-voltage protection features. This new product is housed in a compact 4-pin DIP package, making it suitable for various applications.

The TLP241BP is capable of switching both AC and DC power through its single isolate 280mΩ (maximum) output switch. This switch is implemented using a pair of back-to-back MOSFETs, allowing the relay to handle pulses of up to 4.2A for 100ms with a 1/10 duty cycle.

With an output leakage of 1μA maximum at 40V (25°C), 10μA maximum at 60V, and a rapid increase above 70V, the TLP241BP ensures efficient and reliable performance. Additionally, the relay offers input-to-output isolation of 5kVrms and can operate within a wide temperature range of -40 to +110°C. However, it is important to note that the output current needs to be derated at a rate of -14mA/°C from 25°C upwards.

The recommended input current to operate the output is between 7 and 14mA, with an absolute maximum of 20mA when operating above 97°C. The turn-on time for the relay is typically 400μs (with a maximum of 1.4ms), while the turn-off time is 30μs (with a maximum of 500μs).

One of the key features of the TLP241BP is its over-temperature protection, which latches the output off when the internal temperature exceeds 145°C. To reactivate the output, the temperature needs to be lowered and the LED's input current must be briefly removed. The relay also includes over-voltage protection, which clamps the output between 80 and 100V during brief surges. However, it is important to note that the over-temperature circuit does not provide protection during over-voltage events, and the device may be damaged if over-voltage persists.

The TLP241BP is UL-recognized and cUL-recognized. Additionally, it can be VDE-approved (EN 60747-5-5) if the option 'D4' is specified. The package has a pitch of 7.62mm and offers 7mm creepage and clearance. Alternatively, the TLP241BPF variant has a 10.16mm pitch package with 8mm creepage and clearance. In both cases, the internal isolation thickness is 0.4mm.

Toshiba envisions the TLP241BP being used in various applications, including building management, sensors, I/O interfaces, and battery management. With its enhanced protection features and compact design, this photo-relay offers a reliable solution for a wide range of industries.
